Winter EuropeanTour | Bundesjugendorchester 19-19 January 2025

The National Youth Orchestra of Germany goes ‘very British’: To kick off the 2025 concert year, the young musicians will be travelling from the legendary Musikverein Vienna to the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and on to Great Britain. Together with myself Wayne Marshall, they will be dedicating themselves to the three composers Britten, Gershwin and Holst.

In keeping with the youthful esprit of the talented musicians, they will play Benjamin Britten's classic ‘The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra’, which still playfully introduces audiences to the range of an orchestra today. Rousing motifs and variations make George Gershwin's ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ one of the most popular ‘jazz pieces for the concert hall’. And with Gustav Holst's orchestral suite ‘The Planets’, the young musicians finally reach for the stars. Also on board: the German-British Choral Academy as a cosmically enchanting distant choir.

Rehearsals started in earnest yesterday here's a short clip from Day 1!
